President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to hold key discussions with King Charles III today, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, focusing on Nigerian port renovations, bilateral trade enhancement, and other strategic priorities during Nigeria’s first state visit to the United Kingdom in nearly four decades.

President Tinubu, accompanied by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, arrived at London’s Stansted Airport on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. He was received on behalf of the Royal Family and proceeded to Windsor ahead of the official engagements hosted at Windsor Castle.

This historic visit, spanning March 18–19, marks the first state visit by a Nigerian president to the UK since 1989 and the first hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle.

It underscores the enduring diplomatic, economic, and security ties between the two nations, bolstered by a strategic partnership concluded in November 2024 covering economic cooperation, immigration, and security.

According to official schedules, the day begins with a meeting between President Tinubu, the First Lady, Prince William (the heir to the throne), and Catherine, Princess of Wales.

The royal couple will accompany the Nigerian delegation to Windsor. Later, King Charles III will receive President Tinubu for a private audience at the historic Windsor Castle, followed by a grand state banquet in the evening.

Key topics expected on the agenda include major renovations and modernization of Nigerian ports, with Britain providing significant support.

Nigeria recently secured a landmark £746 million financing deal backed by UK Export Finance (UKEF) for the comprehensive upgrade of the Apapa and Tin Can Island Port Complexes in Lagos.

This initiative aims to boost efficiency, global competitiveness, and maritime infrastructure after decades without major overhauls, with formal aspects potentially highlighted during the visit.

Trade between the two countries remains robust, with bilateral figures showing strong growth. UK exports to Nigeria reached substantial levels in recent quarters, contributing to an overall positive trajectory in economic relations amid a large Nigerian diaspora in London.

On Thursday, March 19, President Tinubu is expected to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and engage with members of the Nigerian community in the UK.

This state visit builds on prior interactions, including Tinubu’s reception by King Charles in September 2024 and the monarch’s earlier visits to Nigeria as Prince of Wales.

It signals continued commitment to deepening Nigeria-UK cooperation in trade, development, and shared global interests.
