‎Tinubu Swears In New NPC Chairman, Two Commissioners, Five Permanent Secretaries

‎President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday administered the oath of office to the new Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Hon. Aminu Yusuf, alongside two commissioners and five newly appointed permanent secretaries during a brief ceremony at the Council Chambers of the State House.

‎The event, held as the opening segment of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, was witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the cabinet, and top government officials.
‎
‎Mr Yusuf, a former member of the House of Representatives from Niger State, was confirmed by the Senate on October 22, 2025, following the Council of State’s endorsement of his nomination in October.
‎
‎He succeeds Nasir Isa Kwarra, whose tenure ended after his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2020.

‎Sworn in alongside the new NPC chairman were: Joseph Haruna Kigbu (Nasarawa State) – Commissioner and Tonga Betara Bularafa (Yobe State) – Commissioner

‎The five new permanent secretaries who also took their oaths are yet to be publicly named by the presidency at the time of filing this report.

‎Speaking briefly after the ceremony, President Tinubu charged the new appointees to bring integrity, diligence, and innovation to their roles, emphasising the critical importance of accurate population data in national planning and resource allocation.
‎
‎“The National Population Commission has a sacred duty to provide Nigeria with credible, acceptable, and timely demographic data,” the President said. “As we prepare for the next census, I expect nothing short of excellence and transparency from the new leadership.”
‎
‎The swearing-in comes amid heightened public anticipation for the long-delayed national population and housing census, originally scheduled for 2023 but repeatedly postponed due to funding and logistical challenges.
‎
‎The FEC meeting continued behind closed doors immediately after the ceremony.
