Tinubu Postpones Trip To G20 And AU-EU Summits As He Awaits Security Reports On Kebbi Schoolgirls’ Abduction And Kwara Church Attack

President Bola Tinubu has suspended his planned trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, following fresh security breaches in Kebbi and Kwara States.

The President was expected to depart Abuja today for the 20th G20 Summit of Leaders in South Africa before proceeding to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit. However, he postponed the trip to receive additional security briefings on the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the armed attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.

In response to an appeal by the Kwara State governor, President Tinubu ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the surrounding communities. He also directed the police to pursue the bandits responsible for the church attack.

According to a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President is awaiting reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on his behalf, as well as detailed assessments from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services on the Kwara incident.

Tinubu reaffirmed his instruction to security agencies to take all necessary measures to rescue the 24 abducted schoolgirls and ensure their safe return.

Reacting to the recent attacks, the President said he was deeply troubled by the security situation.

“As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, I am depressed with the tragic death of our soldiers and officers on active duty. May God comfort the families of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other fallen heroes.

“I am also depressed that heartless terrorists have disrupted the education of innocent schoolgirls. I have directed the security agencies to act swiftly and bring the girls back to Kebbi State.”
