President Bola Tinubu has ordered the deployment of a military battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following the killing of over 170 people in Woro village.

The directive was announced by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said a commander has been appointed and a security operation, code-named Operation Savannah Shield, has commenced.

“Help is on the way for the beleaguered people of Kaiama and others as President Tinubu orders the deployment of a military battalion, the appointment of a commander and the start of Operation Savannah Shield,” Onanuga said.

He was reacting to the Kwara State government’s first official response to the massacre.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq arrived in Kaiama on Wednesday night alongside service chiefs and cabinet members.

Contrary to earlier reports, the governor confirms the deaths of 75 persons only. He was was quoted as saying that 75 local Muslims were killed “simply for refusing to surrender to extremists who preached a strange doctrine.”
