“This pregnancy is life-threatening for you, we have to terminate”: Doctors warned her, but she clung on to God’s promise of a child

In June last year, Jasmine Kaur was listening intently to a sermon being preached in her church – City Harvest Church – when she heard the Holy Spirit speaking to her.

“I will bless you with a child when the head of the Church is ready,” the Holy Spirit said to her in her spirit.

Immediately, Jasmine knew that God was referring to the lack of readiness of her husband, Amos Nathan.

The couple has a three-year-old daughter called Alena. Amos was not keen to have a second child, largely due to financial constraints. The 33-year-old is a food delivery rider while Jasmine, 31, works as a sales executive.

However, husband and wife were committed to following God completely.

“We trusted that God would provide if a child came along so we started trying,” said Amos.

Shortly after in September, Jasmine tested positive for pregnancy, but it ended in an early miscarriage.

The following month in October, she was pregnant again, but had another miscarriage.

The positive pregnancy test result seen in October 2025, though the pregnancy eventually ended in a miscarriage shortly after.

“The doctors said both were likely biochemical pregnancies, where pregnancy loss occurs very early on after implantation. It is quite common, but I was crushed and disappointed by what had happened,” Jasmine told Salt&Light.

At the start of December 2025, Jasmine found herself feeling very down again. In the morning, she had taken a pregnancy test and a faint line appeared. Uncertain if it meant a positive result, she took another test in the afternoon but this time, there was no line. It reminded her of her previous biochemical pregnancies that ended in miscarriage.

“I was just worshipping when the Holy Spirit spoke to me again. He said, ‘I will bless you with a child by the end of the month’,” Jasmine recalled.

She was taken aback. Having experienced the disappointment of two miscarriages, she dared not think too much about it. Instead, she quietly kept it in her heart.

On December 31, Jasmine was in her room when she heard the Holy Spirit saying to her very clearly: “Take a pregnancy test.”

It was New Year Eve and most shops were closed. Jasmine scrambled to order two pregnancy test kits via FoodPanda grocery delivery service.

When she saw the two lines appearing on one of the pregnancy test kits, she recalled what the Holy Spirit had told her earlier that month: That He would bless her with a child.

Just to be sure, she tested herself again on the second pregnancy test kit. It was a digital kit and it not only confirmed the pregnancy, it also indicated that she was one to two weeks pregnant.

A painful scare

The couple was happy with the news but they did not dare to get their hopes up or show too much emotion, given their previous experiences with miscarriages.

When Jasmine went to work two days later, she started experiencing severe cramps that felt like contractions. Though worried, she postponed seeing the doctor.

“We were short of staff so I felt I couldn’t leave work. I called the hospital and told them I couldn’t come in that day but would do so the next morning as it was a Saturday,” Jasmine related.

The next morning, she received urgent care at Singapore General Hospital’s early pregnancy unit. The doctors did a blood test to confirm the pregnancy, followed by an ultrasound.

Jasmine sought treatment at a hospital after experiencing severe cramping.

Jasmine and Amos were told that her pregnancy was not normal. It was a Caesarean scar ectopic pregnancy, meaning that the embryo had implanted itself in the scar tissue left by the C-section delivery of their firstborn. In healthy pregnancies, the embryo attaches to the wall of the uterus.

This condition is potentially life-threatening. As the baby grows on the scar lining, the scar tissue may rupture and tear, resulting in haemorrhaging that could adversely affect both mother and baby.

Given no option but to terminate the pregnancy

The doctor told them: “I have to let you know now, in our medical opinion, this pregnancy cannot carry on as it is life-threatening for the mother. We have to arrange for the termination of this pregnancy.”

Jasmine and Amos were shocked and in tears.

Jasmine was shocked to learn that her pregnancy was not normal at her first hospital visit.

The doctor said they could wait for nature to take its course but that would likely bring harm to Jasmine’s life, so she presented them with two options.

The first was an injection that contains a drug that would terminate the pregnancy. The second was to surgically remove the embryo.

“We told the doctor we wanted to wait but she said we cannot afford to wait as anything can happen in those few days. We were told to pick one of the two options,” Amos told Salt&Light.

But the couple insisted that they needed some time to decide. The doctor instructed them to return in two days for another scan and to arrange for the operation.

Jasmine admitted: “Our hearts were shattered and our faith was deeply tested.”

Faced with an impossibly difficult decision

All their parents came to their home to console them that day.

Jasmine’s father, who is not a believer, told his daughter that her life is more important than anything else, and that she could decide after visiting the doctor on Monday.

The rest of the parents, who are believers, told Jasmine and Amos that they were going to pray and urged them not give up.

Amos felt the conviction that they should not terminate the pregnancy. “But I also told Jasmine that it’s her life and I cannot make the decision for her. If it comes down to having to choose the child or her, I have to choose her – I will not let her life be in danger,” he said.

Jasmine was so shaken by the news that she felt she had lost the faith to go through with the pregnancy.

She said: “I was so discouraged. I heard a voice telling me that I am going to die. I know I have a child who is looking forward to seeing me every day, so I cannot give up my life just because I want another baby.”

She felt that if there was no change in the scan results on Monday, she would have no choice but to end the pregnancy.

“I was so broken that I could no longer pray or hear God’s voice clearly. But I could still feel His presence and His love for me,” she told Salt&Light

That night, as Jasmine was putting her daughter Alena to sleep, the little girl sat up and looked at her, then at her belly.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Jasmine asked her.

Alena placed her hand on her mother’s belly and said: “Don’t take away baby.”

One of the many instances when Jasmine’s daughter Alena placed her hand on her mother’s pregnant belly.

Jasmine had not told her daughter at all about the predicament they were facing. In shock, she asked her daughter: “Who told you this?”

“Baby Jesus,” the three-year-old replied.

“At that moment, I knew I couldn’t give up on the baby.”

Jasmine was so surprised that she texted her husband to tell him what their daughter had just said.

“What do you mean by Baby Jesus?” Jasmine prodded Alena.

But her daughter only smiled and said she wanted to drink her milk and go to sleep.

“At that moment, I knew I couldn’t give up on the baby,” Jasmine said.

“God knew He couldn’t get through to me because I was blocking everything out so He spoke to me through my daughter. He knew that I wouldn’t think that my daughter is lying because she is just three,” she added.

The next day, Jasmine had newfound courage to pray for her baby and her situation.

That weekend, they went to their home church and the church of Jasmine’s mother, where various Pastors and their cell group members prayed for them.

As a Pastor from her mother’s church prayed for her, she prophesied that “the pregnancy will come through.”

A second opinion

On the Monday morning of the doctor’s visit, the same Pastor called Jasmine to pray for her. She declared that “the report will change today”.

All these greatly lifted the couple’s spirits and they went to the hospital full of faith, hoping for a change.

They had also decided to seek a second opinion from a Christian doctor recommended by a fellow cell group member. They called Dr Peter Chew from Gleneagles Hospital and briefed him about their situation before going to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for their appointment.

At SGH, a different doctor saw them but the conclusion was the same. They were told that Jasmine’s scar line could tear open at any moment and that she needed to terminate the pregnancy immediately.

The report from the hospital that indicated that Jasmine’s pregnancy was a “caesarian scar ectopic” one and that “no intrauterine pregnancy” was found.

The couple told the doctor that they wanted to seek a second opinion and she then got on the phone to explain the medical circumstances to Dr Chew. Dr Chew told the doctor that he would see the couple first and then advise them further.

Before they could leave the hospital, Jasmine had to arrange for an appointment to return two days later to terminate the pregnancy. She also had to sign a form acknowledging that they are leaving on their own will to seek a second opinion and that they would release the hospital from any liability should anything untoward happen to her during that time.

“I was still believing for a miracle because there has to be a reason why my daughter said what she did,” Jasmine told Salt&Light.

“But I felt that if Dr Chew said the same thing as the previous hospital, then I would go ahead to do what is needed to be done.”

That same afternoon, they saw Dr Chew at Gleneagles Hospital. Jasmine’s heart had been heavy but the moment she stepped into his clinic, she felt the burden in her heart lifting. Amos also felt an unexplainable peace.

Dr Chew was fatherly and reassuring, but he was also frank. He laid out all the facts on the table, which were as what the previous doctors had told them.

However, he felt that it was still early in her pregnancy, and that there was no harm waiting it out. There was the chance of haemorrhage for Jasmine, he noted, but the risk of losing her life could be minimised with timely medical attention.

Dr Chew would monitor her weekly, and he instructed Jasmine to come back to the clinic anytime if she had spotting and pain.

During that week, Jasmine, who was on hospitalisation leave, prayed, worshipped and rested. Amos continued delivering food orders but listened to worship songs while he made his deliveries. Their Pastors and cell group members also kept them in constant prayer.

One week later, Jasmine and Amos returned to Dr Chew’s clinic for a blood test and ultrasound. The results showed that the pregnancy was progressing well, with the hormone associated with pregnancy rising significantly.

Dr Chew also said something that gave them hope.

“The baby is close to the scar lining, but not attached to it. As the womb expands and the baby grows, the baby may move away from the scar line towards the womb. If the baby remains near the scar line, it will not get the nutrients it needs to grow. Let’s keep hoping and praying,” he told them.

Another week passed as they prayed day and night. Amos clung on to God’s promises for them and chose not to listen to the myriad of opinions others offered them. Whenever doubts or worries came into Jasmine’s mind as she rested, she would listen to worship songs instead.

“Strangely, during that time when I scrolled through social media, I would come across others in similar situations experiencing miracles or sermons that were relevant to my journey,” Jasmine told Salt&Light.

But when they returned for their third appointment, they were in for a rude shock.

No fetal pole, no heartbeat

Dr Chew said he was unable to see the fetal pole (a developing embryo) clearly, nor detect any heartbeat, and immediately sent them to Thomson Imaging Centre to get detailed scans.

The report from the centre stated that a gestational sac was sighted but not a fetal pole. It also could not find any “sonographic evidence of a Caesarean scar ectopic pregnancy”. The embryo was estimated to be five weeks and three days old.

The report from Thomson Imaging Centre that highlighted that there was no more “evidence of a Caesarean scar ectopic pregnancy”.

These strange findings were actually good news, their doctor said.

“It likely means that the baby has moved from the scar line upwards to the uterus. But we can’t see the baby or detect the heartbeat because it could be too early on. In normal pregnancies, we need to hear the heartbeat by week six to eight,” Dr Chew told them.

Jasmine and Amos were happy and relieved.

“I knew that it was God’s doing. What God told my daughter was coming to pass,” said Jasmine.

They updated their church community on this miraculous development and asked them to pray for baby’s heartbeat to be heard soon.

They went back for the next appointment the following week hoping to hear their baby’s heartbeat.

There was none.

“It could be still early… as long as we hear it by the next two weeks, it should be fine,” Dr Chew reassured them.

Amos told Salt&Light: “We continued to pray and hold on to God’s promise, believing that the same God who moved our baby would also sustain his or her life.”

A Caesarean scar pregnancy is rare, occurring roughly once in every 2,000 pregnancies. It is not known what percentage of such pregnancies grow towards the uterine cavity, develop into intrauterine pregnancies and are successfully carried to term, given that these pregnancies are associated with a very high risk of massive bleeding and uterine rupture.

A journey of healing and blessings

During church service on Saturday that week, the congregation went into an extended time of prayer. As he prayed, Amos found himself breaking down and crying uncontrollably, “like a baby”.

“I felt God surfacing my estranged situation with my brother and saying to me: ‘Let it go, I will bless you’,” said Amos, who had not spoken to his brother for five years.

“All that was in my mind was that I need to hear my baby’s heartbeat.”

His brother attends the same church as him, but usually he goes on Sundays. That day, his brother happened to be in the same service, but they were sitting on opposite ends of the hall.

When service ended, Amos bumped into his brother in the holding area outside. Usually, his brother would have headed straight to the carpark.

“I knew I had to put aside my ego and forgive and reconcile with him if I want to receive my blessing. At that time, all that was in my mind was that I need to hear my baby’s heartbeat,” said Amos.

Amos went up to his brother and shared with him how God was prompting him to make good with him. By then, his brother was holding back his own tears. They hugged and his brother later offered his family a lift home.

The next day, Amos did receive a blessing, though it came in a different form.

He suddenly received a PayNow transfer from an unfamiliar name, which he later realised was from the principal of his daughter’s preschool. For some time, the principal had felt prompted by God to give him a particular sum of money, but she wrestled over it as she did not know if she had heard God correctly. That day was the day she felt she really had to do so.

It was the exact amount that the couple needed to pay off the balance of their medical bills at Gleneagles Hospital.

“I was gobsmacked at the timing of it all. He taught us the beauty of obeying and trusting him,” said Amos.

The following week on January 29, the couple stepped into Dr Chew’s clinic with a quiet confidence that they would hear their baby’s heartbeat.

“There is a strong heartbeat,” Dr Chew said as they all collectively heard the surreal thumping sound emitted from the ultrasound machine.

The baby seen on the ultrasound scan on the day that they heard the heartbeat.

“We all knew that God had done a miracle,” said Jasmine.

They shared the wonderful news with their church community and that very night, their testimony was also shared with the rest of the church who tuned in to their late-night prayer meeting.

“The Pastor said that he received a number of prayer requests regarding similar situations that night. I believe what we went through was meant to be shared with others to encourage them not to give up,” said Jasmine.

She is currently in her 16th week of pregnancy. The baby, who is growing healthily, is estimated to arrive in September.

“God is faithful to His promises,” said Jasmine. “What He speaks, He will fulfil in His perfect time and way.”
