Nigeria expressed its condolences to the Republic of Ghana following the passing of Rashid Bawa, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, who reportedly died in Abuja on Thursday after a brief illness.

In a statement, the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Francisca Omayuli, mourned the loss of Bawa, emphasizing his significant contributions.

The statement conveyed, “The Federal Government of Nigeria extends its condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Ghana on the passing of H.E. Rashid Bawa, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, on Thursday, 14th March 2024, in Abuja after a brief illness.

“The late High Commissioner was an esteemed diplomat known for his efforts in strengthening the longstanding and strategic relations between Nigeria and Ghana.

“His diplomatic skills and sincere dedication to fostering friendly relations and mutual understanding between the two countries during his time as Ghana’s High Commissioner in Nigeria will always be remembered. He will be greatly missed.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may God give strength to his family, the government, and the people of Ghana during this difficult time.”

Bawa was appointed as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria in 2017 by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Prior to this role, Bawa served as Ghana’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia from 2005 to 2008 and was a member of the parliament for Akan constituency between 2001 and January 2005 as an independent candidate.
