The Kevin McCourt Story:  From London’s Lincoln’s Inn to Nairobi’s Senior Counsel

KEVIN DERMOT McCOURT

Kevin Dermot McCourt SC is a founding partner of Kairu & McCourt Advocates, a law firm established in 1993 and based in Nairobi, Kenya.

In 2022, he was conferred with the prestigious rank of Senior Counsel (SC) by President Uhuru Kenyatta for his exemplary service and contribution to the legal profession.

He specializes in providing legal services to a diverse portfolio including corporates, NGOs, parastatals, and government entities.

Early Life and Educational Background

McCourt attended the prestigious St. Mary’s Boys School in Nairobi from 1972 to 1975, where he completed his A-Levels.

The advocate briefly attended St. Edmunds Boys’ Schools in Canterbury, Kent, in 1975 for his “O” Levels, and later joined Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys between 1978 and 1981.

Kevin earned a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Law Degree between 1981 and 1984, graduating from the University of London, then known as the University of North London.

He completed his vocational training with the Council of Legal Education in the UK and was admitted as a Barrister of Lincoln’s Inn in 1985.

Upon returning to Kenya, Kevin obtained his Diploma in Law in 1986 and 1987 to qualify for admission to the Kenyan bar, and was officially admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in November 1987.

McCourt holds an advanced training in Alternative Dispute Resolution from California State University, Sacramento.

The senior counsel has undergone professional development in Justice Advocacy and Human Rights Policy Reforms through organizations like the International Commission of Jurists.

Kevin Dermot McCourt Career

After qualifying as a Barrister, Dermot served as a Legal Policy Advisor for the Greater London Council (GLC) and the Inner London Education Authority, advising on the impact of statutes on education in England, between 1985 and 1986.

From 1986 to1993, he completed pupillage at Archer & Wilcock Advocates in Nairobi, focusing on Commercial Law and Conveyancing.

The senior counsel practised as an Associate Advocate at Kimani Kairu & Company Advocates between 1988 and 1993.

In 1993, he established Kairu & McCourt Advocates as a founding partner and has led the firm for over 30 years, specializing in complex civil litigation and corporate advisory.

Kevin Dermot McCort served as a Council Member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) from 1991 to 1995 and remains active on the Bar Bench and Rules Committees.

Between 2000 and 2003, he served as a Board Member of the Auctioneers Licensing Board.

He held the position of Director for Dunlop (K) Limited from 1995 to 1998.

Achievements

McCourt is recognized for his extensive experience across several high-stakes legal domains:

Banking and Finance- he is an expert in banking law, securities, and financial restructuring.

Dispute Resolution – Dermot is active in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and arbitration, with training from California State University.

Intellectual Property (IP)- he handles registration, protection, and litigation for trademarks and patents.

Insurance Law- the advocate provides specialized consultancy and litigation services for major insurance firms.

He is a member of the Institute of Certified Secretaries (Kenya), serving in this capacity since 2018.
