Tension Rises in Tanzania as Citizens Raid Politician’s Gas Station Amid Election Dispute

Tension continues to mount in Tanzania following the disputed October 29 presidential election, as residents in Mwanza reportedly raided a gas station belonging to a prominent Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) politician.

Eyewitnesses said the crowd stormed the facility in broad daylight, broke into storage areas, and carted away cylinders of cooking gas. Videos circulating online show people laughing and cheering as they filled containers and loaded gas bottles onto motorcycles and carts.

The incident occurred amid widespread protests over alleged electoral fraud, reflecting growing anger toward political elites. Some residents described the raid as a symbolic “people’s reward” for years of economic hardship and political oppression.

Authorities have condemned the attack as criminal and vowed to restore order. Police have since stepped up patrols across Mwanza to curb further unrest.
