Ten Hag claims Ronaldo’s decline began after Real Madrid exit

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reignited his war of words with Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming the Portuguese forward has not performed at his highest level since leaving Real Madrid.

In an interview, Ten Hag acknowledged Ronaldo’s status as one of football’s greatest players but argued that his performances had declined significantly over the past seven or eight years.

“Ever since he was sold to Juventus, it was effectively over,” Ten Hag said, suggesting that Real Madrid’s ability to part ways with legendary players at the right time was one of the club’s greatest strengths.

The Dutch coach also revisited his difficult relationship with Ronaldo during their time together at Manchester United.

Ten Hag said he had clearly explained his tactical plans, the role expected of Ronaldo and the responsibilities of both parties when he took charge at Old Trafford in 2022.

However, he insisted that the forward struggled to meet the physical demands of his system, particularly the high-intensity training and pressing required in the Premier League.

Ronaldo’s second spell at Manchester United ended in November 2022 after his contract was terminated by mutual agreement, following a controversial interview in which he criticised the club and its management.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner subsequently joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in December 2022.
