Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday inaugurated Tata Motors’ new passenger vehicle and Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility at Panapakkam in Ranipet district, formally marking the start of operations at the greenfield plant inside the SIPCOT industrial complex.

The Rs 9,000 crore facility began operations on February 9, 2026. The first vehicle rolled out from the plant was the Range Rover Evoque, which will be locally assembled as a completely knocked-down unit for Jaguar Land Rover.

Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran attended the inauguration along with state ministers, senior officials, and executives from Tata Motors and JLR.

The Panapakkam unit will assemble JLR models and add capacity for Tata Motors’ own passenger vehicle portfolio. It will supplement JLR CKD assembly currently undertaken at Tata Motors’ Chakan plant near Pune.

The facility represents the first phase of a larger greenfield project designed to produce next-generation vehicles, including electric vehicles, for both Tata Motors and JLR brands. Production will be scaled over the next five to seven years to reach a designed annual capacity of up to 250,000 vehicles for domestic and international markets.

The project is expected to generate more than 5,000 direct and indirect jobs and support the regional supplier ecosystem. The company said the plant will operate entirely on renewable energy and be water positive, aligned with global environmental standards. Its proximity to Tamil Nadu’s ports supports both domestic distribution and exports, including electric vehicles.

Speaking at the event, Stalin said, “This day, when the Tata Group's factory has been inaugurated, is a golden day for Tamil Nadu.” He added that when Tamil Nadu gives a guarantee, it delivers with “certainty and global quality”. Chandrasekaran said the facility reflects the Tata Group’s focus on sustainable, technology-driven manufacturing in India.
