Surgeon Sacked At EKSUTH After Investigation Into Alleged Organ Removal — State Government To Fund New Transplant

The Ekiti State government has terminated the employment of a surgeon at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) following an investigation into allegations of organ removal during a surgical procedure.

A seven-member Panel of Enquiry, chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile, was set up two weeks ago after patient Joshua Afolayan raised claims of organ harvesting at the hospital.

On Friday, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, announced the dismissal of the surgeon responsible for the procedure, noting that the incident was determined to be a surgical complication, not organ harvesting for rituals as initially feared.

Dr. Filani assured the public that the government would cover the full cost of a new kidney transplant for Mr. Afolayan, as well as his post-transplant care and related medical expenses for the next two years.

He added that all members of the surgical team present during the operation would be suspended for one month pending further administrative review. The commissioner also confirmed that a comprehensive reorganisation of EKSUTH’s relevant departments would be carried out to enhance clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety.
