Super Eagles: Chelle vow to inject  new faces after impressive Russia outing

• By Tunde Liadi

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle said some of the younger players who featured in Tuesday’s 3–3 friendly draw with Russia have strengthened their case for a place in his November squad.

Nigeria fielded a changed side in Nizhny Novgorod and recovered from 3–1 down. Kelechi Iheanacho scored the opener, Peter Edokpolor pulled a goal back in the 78th minute, and Akor Adams equalised deep into stoppage time.

“Some of them showed us what they can do and they will be part of the next FIFA window,” Chelle said in the post-match remarks supplied. He added that he expected to draw up his preliminary list for November in about 10 days.

Edokpolor’s goal was the clearest individual breakthrough, while the match also gave Chelle another chance to assess Abdullahi Bewene, Chibuzo Nwoko and Abubakar Umar.

The 19-year-old Edokpolor made an immediate impact off the bench as Nigeria fought back to draw 3–3 with Russia in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Nigeria led through Kelechi Iheanacho but trailed 3–1 when Edokpolor replaced Aderemi Adeoye in the 70^th  minute.

Eight minutes later, the Benfica forward drove into the penalty area from the left and scored to bring the Super Eagles within one goal of the hosts. Akor Adams completed the comeback in the fourth minute of added time.

Edokpolor’s pace and direct run changed the direction of Nigeria’s attack at a difficult point in the match. The performance gives Chelle another forward to consider as he prepares his squad for November.
