Super Eagles can still qualify for 2026 World Cup – Agu

Former Nigeria goalkeeper, Alloy Agu, said the Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup are still alive despite their tough position in Group C.

The 58-year-old maintained that “nothing is impossible in football” and urged all stakeholders—players, coaches, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and even government authorities—to rally around the team ahead of this weekend’s crucial qualifier against Rwanda in Uyo.

“Impossible does not exist in the lexicon of the round leather game,” Agu said. “We watched Liverpool versus Arsenal on Sunday—it looked destined for a goalless draw until Liverpool snatched the win late on. That’s football. Anything can happen.”

Nigeria, who have featured in six World Cup tournaments (1994, 1998, 2002, 2010, 2014, 2018), are aiming for a seventh appearance at the finals in Mexico, USA, and Canada. Agu believes victory over Rwanda could reignite their campaign, which continues next Tuesday away to South Africa in Bloemfontein.

“It all has to start from somewhere—this weekend in Uyo,” he stressed. “A win against Rwanda is important, and then we can build on it in South Africa. With the talents Nigeria has, qualification is still possible.”
