Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has expressed his full support for the team’s current interim manager, Augustine Eguavoen.

Eguavoen, who is guiding the Super Eagles on an interim basis, has already led the team to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Austin Eguavoen is a smart guy. He is not stupid. I want to make it clear that he has my full support because he is someone I respect a lot,” Oliseh told News Central. “He and I both worked hard to bring glory to our country. He is an honest and decent man, and, being my fellow Nigerian, he has my unwavering support.”

The Super Eagles’ next goal is to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Currently, the three-time African champions have yet to register a win in their qualifying group, with three draws and one loss from four matches.

“The challenge ahead is tough, but it’s not impossible. We can still qualify,” Oliseh remarked. “We need to secure some key victories. We’re four points behind, but we’re not alone in this situation. Two or three teams are in the same boat, which makes it harder, especially when facing those teams. However, this is not insurmountable for Nigerians. I know this from experience—back in 2002, when I was captain, we were five points behind and fought hard to qualify for the World Cup. We can do it again.”
