Story of the 3 Businessmen Behind Kenya’s Famous China Square

China Square is a one-stop retail shop offering household items, electronics, clothing, and kitchenware. It was established and began operations at Kenyatta University’s Unicity Mall, Nairobi, in January 2023.

China Square Limited sells a variety of goods imported from China at relatively cheaper rates compared to local retailers.

Lei Cheng, who was previously believed to be the sole owner of China Square, owns only one per cent of the property.

The company registry (CR12) documents show that Fujian Festar Holding Limited owns 99 percent of China Square.

Fujian Festar Holding Limited has two directors and shareholders, Lian Feng and Chen Xiuhua.

Feng owns 60 percent of the Company while Xiuhua owns the remaining 40 percent.

Both directors are Chinese nationals.

China Square Registration in Kenya

The two registered Fujian Festar Holding Limited in Kenya on July 25, 2022.

The Company’s number is PVT-27U58D77, while the nominal share capital is 10,000.00.

Feng and Xiuhua started with 100 ordinary shares worth Ksh1000 each.

NTV reported that Fujian, a Kenyan-registered company, serves as the director of China Square, rather than an individual.

Subsequently, the two businessmen registered China Square Limited on August 19, 2022.

It also had 100 ordinary shares worth Ksh1000 each.

Kuria Threatens to Deport Lee Cheng

China Square was forced to temporarily shut down in February 2023, just a month after starting operations.

This was after former Trade Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria threatened to deport Lei Cheng and any foreign national engaged in retail trade.

Kuria said the Unicity Mall store was a threat to local traders.

Cheng said the decision was also due to public safety issues, shortage of tills, misleading statements, and over-expectations by customers across social media.

He said the Supermarket lacked sufficient payment processing facilities, leading to long queues, which had negatively impacted customer experience.

“As a supermarket, we are unable to handle the high volume of traffic, which has become a severe concern for the public safety of all our customers. We are arranging more security guards on-site,” China Square said in a statement.

Cheng also dismissed calls for him to close shop, stating that Lei China Square has all the legal requirements.

Branches

China Square has other branches in Nairobi at Waterfront Mall in Karen, Greenspan Mall, Two Rivers Mall and Hyper Mall.

It also has branches at Nyali Bazaar in Mombasa and Mega City Mall in Kisumu.
