Simeone hails Arsenal as ‘best team’ Atletico after 4-0 defeat

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone described Arsenal as the “best team” his side have faced this season following a 4-0 Champions League defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

After a goalless first half, the Gunners struck four times in 13 second-half minutes to dismantle the La Liga side.

Gabriel Magalhaes opened the scoring on the hour mark with a header from Declan Rice’s pinpoint cross, before Gabriel Martinelli doubled the lead with a composed finish after a driving run from teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Viktor Gyokeres then scored twice to seal an emphatic win for Mikel Arteta’s men, who now sit joint-top of their Champions League group after three matches.

Following the defeat, Atletico’s heaviest in the competition, Simeone was full of praise for Arsenal’s quality and intensity.

“Yes, I would say the best team we have faced this season,” Simeone told Amazon Prime (via Metro). “They compete so well, their players run and run, and they have quality all over the pitch. They deserved to win today and I want to congratulate them.

“It is a learning curve. We just need to keep improving. I thought we competed really well to begin with. From 60 minutes they were the better team and deserved to win.

“We have to put this behind us now and focus in training on the things that went right, while improving on the things that didn’t.”
