The Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Eugene Cheta Epelle, has denied allegations that he led thugs to assault Winnie Miller, the young lady who shared photos and videos of a dilapidated secondary school in Ahoada West on social media.

In his response to the allegations, the chairman claimed he never led thugs to her house and that the incident was a misunderstanding that occurred when he stopped to sympathize with Miller’s mother about an accident.

“I never led thugs to her house. The people they are calling thugs were myself, my driver, my brother, and some others. We were driving towards her house when I coincidentally saw her mother in front of their house. She waved at me and I stopped. She told me they had an accident that day and I sympathized with her, saying she should have called me so I could help them,” Epelle explained.

“I then asked her to tell her daughter to bring down the post so it would not look like I am against the Rivers State government. I’m not against her post, but she should have taken permission from me before posting about the issue on her social media page.”

The chairman explained that Miller is his media aide whose name remains on his payroll.

“She’s my aide that I’m paying till today. Her name is still in my payroll till today. Please tell her, let her step down the post so that it won’t seem that since she’s my aide, that I’m against the Rivers State government. That I asked her to post something that belongs to the Rivers State government.”

“I’m not against her post, but the way—the manner of way she posted the thing, because she’s my staff. She ought to take order from me before she post anything. She didn’t take order from me. I didn’t know who gave her the order to post that thing, media aide.”

According to the chairman, when he told Miller’s mother to relay the message, Miller came out from their compound and started shouting.

“When she came out, she say, ‘Step down which post? Did I give her money to buy phone that I would come and say let her stop the post, step down the post?’ And I became surprised. The way she was shouting using her words, the mother now pushed her inside the first time.”

“When the mother turn by, the mother now kneel down and start begging me so I should forgive her. I say, ‘No, no, no, no. Get up, Chimela.’ As I’m about dragging Chimela up, she now came out the second time, still using insultive words on me, shouting.”

The chairman admitted that his younger brother, Monday Cheta Epelle, pushed Miller after she allegedly insulted his office.

“Then my younger brother now told her, confronted her, ‘Do you know you’re insulting the local government chairman, executive chairman?’ She said that, ‘Whose type of executive chairman is that? Who deputy executive chairman is that?’ That was the anger of my younger brother.”

“Then she now—he now pushed her, because she always waving hands close to my face. That is all this matter. But her—In the process, I didn’t support my younger brother pushing her because I’m not that type of violent—volatile. I don’t support him pushing her. I even cautioned him not to try that next time.”

The chairman claimed the injury Miller sustained was from her teeth biting her lips during the push.

“But in process of pushing her, her teeth now bite her lips and she sustained an, a little injury. That how she tied the blood you’re seeing in that camera, in that Facebook, this thing. Nobody beat her.”

“If you see my younger brother in question, blowing Minie, Minie will not survive it. Because the size of Monday is bigger than, far bigger than Minie. And Minie is a small girl.”

In stark contrast to the chairman’s account, Winnie Miller alleged that the chairman came to her house on Sunday around twelve noon after church service and confronted her mother.

“The Chairman of Ahoada West LGA, Eugene Cheta Epelle, came to my house on Sunday and confronted my mother, telling her that her daughter wants to damage his image on social media because of the video I posted showing the dilapidated secondary school in Ahoada West,” Miller narrated.

She said the chairman accused her of insulting his office with the post she made about the secondary school in Odiukwu.

“He said I had insulted his office. That video has made him to get calls from several persons that have insulted his office,” Miller said.

Miller alleged that the chairman instructed his brother, Monday Cheetah Epelle, to beat her and “teach her a lesson.”

“And for that, he instructed his brother, Monday Cheetah Epelle, to beat me and teach me lesson. While at that, Monday Cheetah pushed my gates, came into my compound and started beating me,” she narrated.

The young lady said the chairman’s brother strangled her neck and she still has injuries from the attack.

“If not for the intervention of my neighbours in the community, he would have succeeded in killing me like he said. He strangled my neck. I still have neck injuries up to now,” Miller said.

Miller revealed that a passerby, identified as Godstime Kakoro, saved her from being hit with a shovel.

“That passerby is the one which is Godstime Kakoro. He can also be interviewed. He’s the one that dragged the shovel that he wants to use on my head. Godstime Kakoro dragged that shovel from Monday Cheetah from hitting me,” she said.

Miller alleged that the chairman supervised the attack on her while his security personnel stood by and did nothing.

“And that’s what the chairman did to me. He supervised my beating. He was there with his security personnel, and nothing was done,” she concluded.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with the Nigerian Bar Association threatening to prosecute the chairman unless he apologizes publicly to the victim and undertakes appropriate restitution within two weeks.
