DUBAI: Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said museums play an important role in bringing people together, helping communities understand different cultures and preserving shared human stories for future generations.

Speaking on the occasion of International Museum Day, Sheikha Latifa said cultural spaces have become even more meaningful at a time when societies around the world face growing divisions and rapid change. She noted that museums allow people to connect beyond politics and daily events by focusing on shared human experiences, identity and memory.

This year’s International Museum Day theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” reflects the growing global importance of cultural institutions in encouraging dialogue and understanding across communities. Museums worldwide are increasingly being recognised not only as places preserving history, but also as spaces that inspire education, creativity and social connection.

Sheikha Latifa said museums do not erase differences between people, but instead create opportunities for those differences to be understood and appreciated. In a multicultural city like Dubai, she said museums help strengthen mutual respect and reinforce the sense of belonging that allows communities from different backgrounds to live and grow together.

Dubai has continued expanding its cultural and heritage initiatives over recent years through museums, art institutions and historical projects designed to celebrate both Emirati identity and international cultural exchange. Officials say these efforts support the emirate’s broader vision of becoming a leading global centre for culture, creativity and innovation.

Sheikha Latifa also stressed that progress and modern development should never come at the expense of preserving memory, heritage and cultural values. She added that museums help new generations stay connected to their roots while encouraging them to engage openly with the wider world.
