SCORENigeria Top 5: Elijah Adebayo, Nwankwo comeback goals give clubs hope

Both strikers Elijah Adebayo and Silas Nwankwo returned from injury to score crucial goals for their respective clubs in England and Sweden that may well prove valuable in their campaigns.

5.Silas Nwankwo

The one-time NPFL Goal King has staged a remarkable comeback after he lost most of last season to injury when he scored his first league goal in Sweden for Mjallby at the weekend. The striker had netted eight goals in his first season in Sweden only for him to go down to a long-term injury that cost him the entire 2023 season. He finally got his first goal in five appearances against Brommapojkarna in a 1-1 home draw.

4.Tani Oluwaseyi

This Abuja-born striker has made phenomenal progress in his career this season after he fired his fifth goal of the season in the Major League Soccer (MLS) for Minnesota United. The 23-year-old striker scored in a 2-1 win over Atlanta United for Minnesota to go top of the Western Conference. It was his third straight goal and he was named Man of the Match. It also made him the youngest player in the MLS history to achieve this milestone. He is eligible to play for Canada amid reports that the 2026 World Cup co-hosts now have him on their radar.

3.Chuba Akpom

Chuba Akpom scored a goal and made an assists in his Dutch club Ajax 4-1 win at FC Volendam. 

Akpom assisted Kenneth Taylor for the opening goal in the 25th minute, before he went on to score in the 59th minute to make it 2-0 for Ajax. He has now scored 11 goals in the league this season after a difficult start to life in Holland

2.Victor Boniface

The Super Eagles striker has clearly put behind him the four-month injury layoff by scoring his 12^th Bundesliga goal as Bayer Leverkusen equaled Benfica record of going 48 games without defeat in a season. He and his German club are also on the verge of winning both the UEFA Europa League and the German Cup to sign off on a truly historic campaign that has already fetched them a first-ever Bundesliga championship.

1.Elijah Adebayo

Luton Town battle to stay up in the Premier League was somehow kept alive by a superb strike by the big striker, who is back in action after injury. Luton needed to win at home against Everton to boost their chances of survival, but the 1-1 home draw still leaves them with a little chance. Adebayo’s equalizer was his 10^th goal in his debut season in the Premier League and his club will be banking on more goals from his big boots in their remaining two games to the end of the season. They are three points from safety with an away trip to West Ham and a home game versus Fulham. Their joint leading scorer could still have a say in their fight for survival.
