For the past few years, my beauty hyperfixation has been finding my signature scent. I’ve smelled quite literally every fragrance in Sephora, ordered endless samples from niche perfume houses, and impulse-purchased way too many full-size bottles. But somehow, I still feel like I haven’t found the scent. Then I heard about the concept of scent stacking, and I think I know why. I’ve been expecting a singular perfume to smell incredible, perfectly encapsulate me, last all day, and not break the bank. You can see why it’s been a journey. That’s why I was immediately intrigued when Pinterest Predicts 2026 reported that scent stacking is going to be everywhere next year. And I believe its layered approach just may solve all my fragrance woes.

What is Scent Stacking?

Instead of using one perfume and calling it a day, scent stacking is layering different perfumes and fragrance oils to create a scent that’s truly one of a kind. No need to gatekeep your favorite perfume because you’re scared everyone will start to smell the same. With scent stacking, you can use multiple fragrances to create a truly unique combo.

For some, this starts in the shower with body care. They’ll focus on the perfect scent combination beginning with their body wash, layering with a body lotion or oil, and finishing it off with a mix of their favorite perfumes or perfume oils. For others, it can be as simple as finishing your go-to fragrance with a spritz of a different, complementary perfume. The best part of scent stacking is how tailored it is to your preferences.

How to Layer Perfumes

OK, all that sounds great—but are you just supposed to just blindly layer a million scents and it will magically smell amazing? Probably not. There’s a lot of fun experimentation to be had with scent stacking, but if you’re mixing a vanilla scent with a citrus one and finishing it off with a spritz of rose, you may end up with a headache-inducing cloud of fragrance instead of a newfound perfume obsession.

A great way to start scent stacking is by considering the notes you already love. Maybe you’re a vanilla perfume girl, you gravitate toward ambery scents, or you can’t resist a bright bergamot note—look for fragranced products that feature those same notes. If you’re having trouble narrowing it down to specific notes, you can also think in terms of fragrance families. Scents that are warm and cozy will likely layer well together, complementing each other and adding depth rather than overpowering, and the same goes for fruity florals. Once you get comfortable with scent stacking, though, the world is truly your oyster. You can play with more out-of-the-box combinations and constantly discover new ways to use your favorite perfumes.
