Saudi Arabia has strengthened its presence on the global academic stage by sending teams of gifted students to compete in two of the world’s most prestigious science competitions—the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in Lithuania and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in China.

The participation reflects the Kingdom’s continued investment in nurturing talented students and preparing them to compete alongside the world’s brightest young minds.

Competing on the Global Stage

The Saudi biology team, consisting of four high school students, is taking part in the International Biology Olympiad in Vilnius from July 12 to 19, where more than 300 students from 78 countries are competing.

At the same time, a six-member Saudi mathematics team is representing the Kingdom at the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai, China, competing against students from more than 100 countries through July 21.

Intensive Preparation by National Experts

Both teams were trained through the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) in partnership with the Ministry of Education under the International Olympiads Program.

Their preparation included specialized academic forums, intensive theoretical and practical training camps, and advanced coaching delivered by national and international experts.

The students were initially identified through the National Science and Mathematics Olympiad (NASMO) before advancing through multiple levels of rigorous preparation for international competition.

Challenges Designed for the World’s Best Students

The International Biology Olympiad is regarded as the world’s premier life sciences competition for secondary school students, testing scientific knowledge, laboratory skills, analytical thinking, and the ability to solve complex biological challenges while encouraging international scientific collaboration.

Meanwhile, the International Mathematical Olympiad, founded in 1959, is the oldest and most prestigious mathematics competition for high school students. Contestants tackle demanding problems in geometry, algebra, combinatorics, and number theory, with the competition emphasizing creativity, logical reasoning, and advanced problem-solving skills.

A Growing International Presence

Saudi Arabia has maintained a consistent presence at the International Mathematical Olympiad since sending its first official student delegation in 2004, following its participation as an observer in 2003.

Through initiatives led by Mawhiba and the Ministry of Education, the Kingdom continues to develop world-class talent, strengthening its global standing in science, technology, mathematics, and innovation while empowering the next generation of Saudi researchers and innovators.
