President Joe Biden has once again put forth the nomination of billionaire campaign donor and bundler, Samuel Slater, to serve on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) - the governing body that oversees Reagan National and Dulles International airports. This move comes after Slater's initial nomination in 2021 faced a roadblock in the Senate Commerce Committee, leading to a necessary renomination.

Samuel Slater: A Diverse Portfolio

Slater's professional journey has seen him don many hats. He has held managing partner roles at Tremont Asset Management and Slater Family Holdings. His involvement in sports is marked by his board membership on the Seattle Kraken National Hockey League team. Adding to his eclectic mix of professions, Slater also co-founded Burn Later Productions, a film studio.

Slater's Contribution to Biden's Campaign

During Biden's 2020 presidential campaign, Slater emerged as a significant contributor, donating nearly $140,000 individually. In addition to his personal contributions, Slater served on the campaign's National Finance Committee, bundling other donors' contributions. Post-election, Slater continued his financial support, donating $150,000 to Biden's inaugural committee.

Controversy Surrounding the Nomination

However, Slater's nomination has not been without controversy. Critics, including the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), express concern that Slater's appointment serves as an unethical reward for his substantial financial support to Biden, dubbing it a glaring example of 'swampy' Washington politics. Despite these allegations, Slater maintains that his donations do not present a conflict of interest. The White House and Slater Family Holdings have yet to comment on the matter.
