Sakawa is driving a moral crisis – NCCE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has voiced concern over what it sees as a growing moral crisis in Ghana, fueled by internet fraud, money rituals, and unchecked materialism.

Speaking at the Commission’s first National Dialogue held in Accra on Tuesday, September 9, Victor Brobbey, Deputy Chairman for General Services, said the country’s traditional values are being undermined by a culture that glorifies wealth at any cost.

The event was held under the theme “Empowering Citizens, Promoting Accountability”.

Brobbey painted a troubling picture of how deeply rooted the problem has become. He said practices like sakawa, a blend of cyber fraud and ritualism, are gaining social acceptance, especially among young people.

What was once condemned is now often celebrated.

“We continue to see a disturbing trend across communities. What we’re experiencing today is not just a lapse in values; it is a crisis of moral direction,” he said. “Our young people are under immense pressure to acquire wealth by any means necessary.”

He also pointed to the role of so-called spiritual leaders who exploit vulnerable people, further weakening the ethical foundation of society.

According to him, fraudulent behavior is no longer viewed with shame but is often seen as cleverness or even divine favor.

The NCCE believes that without urgent intervention, this erosion of values could have long-lasting consequences for Ghana’s social fabric.
