President William Ruto on Thursday promised Harambee Stars players a Ksh 1 million grant each to cover half the cost of a two-bedroom affordable house.

Since the houses are priced at Ksh 2 million, the players will clear the remaining balance either through a mortgage plan or a one-time cash payment.

“The two-bedroom house that we have agreed on in affordable housing costs Ksh2 million. We are going to pay for you half that amount, which is Ksh1 million. Alternatively, we will be giving you a mortgage which you can pay for over 20 years, and that would translate to a payment of Ksh2,000 or Ksh3,000 every month,” Ruto stated.

They will also have the choice of selecting houses from any part of the country. The President added that the reward would not be converted into cash but strictly issued as housing units.

“There is no room for exchanging the house for money. There is only the house, and you will get a chance to choose a house in a town of your choice, be it Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, or wherever you want,” Ruto said.

Ruto made the pledge during a special luncheon at the State House, where he received Harambee Stars team to celebrate their performance at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). He declared that he was “immensely proud” of their performance, appreciating the determination and perseverance that saw them emerge victorious in a demanding group.

The President noted that lessons learned from CHAN 2024 will be applied in Harambee Stars’ preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

“The journey to AFCON 2027 starts now, built on resilience, belief, and the lessons you have shown the continent at CHAN,” Ruto said.

The President also echoed Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya’s recent announcement on improved reward packages for athletes.

Olympians will receive bigger incentives: Ksh 3 million for gold (previously Ksh 750,000), Ksh 2 million for silver (previously Ksh 500,000), and Ksh 1 million for bronze (previously Ksh 250,000).

In team sports, squads will also benefit in the new system, with prizes set at Ksh 750,000 for gold up from Ksh100,000, Ksh 500,000 for silver from Ksh75,000, and Ksh 350,000 for bronze from Ksh50,000.

Ruto linked the incentives to his Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, noting that sports remain a key pillar in nurturing talent and changing lives.
