Ruth Odinga Raises Doubts Over Ruto’s Promise to Honour Pre-Election Agreement

Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has thrown her weight behind ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, challenging President William Ruto’s ability to honor pre-election agreements amid growing tensions within ODM.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 5, the lawmaker defended Sifuna against accusations of party rebellion after he publicly questioned the viability of ODM’s potential pre-election pact with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Ruth Odinga directly confronted critics who labeled Sifuna a “rebel” for highlighting the failed implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between ODM and Kenya Kwanza in March 2024.

“If indeed he is a ‘rebel’, then how many times was Raila Odinga one? Even in the ‘nusu mkate’ government, Raila would still stand his ground,” Ruth stated, drawing parallels to ODM leader Raila Odinga’s history of principled political positions.

The lawmaker posed a pointed question to pro-government politicians: “If the MoU has not been honoured, with less than 30 days to its expiry, what is so ‘treasonous’ about Sifuna publicly declaring it ‘dead’?”

Ruth Odinga raised critical concerns about President Ruto’s track record on political agreements, pointing to the unfulfilled 2024 UDA-ODM MoU as evidence of unreliability.

“How sure are you that President William Ruto will honour the pre-election pact you are all talking about? Will he use a different signature?” she asked, casting doubt on the credibility of any future coalition agreements ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general elections.

The Kisumu representative made clear she won’t back down from her position, regardless of political pressure or labeling.

“I must put these here so that when the going gets tough, you won’t accuse me of being mute,” she added.
