Rooney: Ekitike form puts pressure on Isak

Wayne Rooney believes Hugo Ekitike’s impressive run of form could complicate Liverpool’s plans when Alexander Isak returns from injury, insisting the Sweden striker should be concerned by developments at Anfield.

Ekitike continued his fine season by scoring twice as Liverpool came from behind to beat Newcastle at the weekend, taking his tally to 15 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions.

Ekitike staking his claim

The 23-year-old French forward has justified Liverpool’s decision to sign him from Eintracht Frankfurt for an initial £69m.

He has also formed a growing on-field partnership with Florian Wirtz, another major summer arrival following his £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen.

Their understanding has added a new attacking power to Liverpool’s play, increasing competition in the forward line.

Isak facing selection doubts

Rooney argues that Ekitike’s impact raises serious questions about where Isak fits once fully fit.

The 26-year-old joined Liverpool from Newcastle in a British record £125m deal but has struggled to establish himself, scoring three goals in 16 appearances before suffering a broken leg in December.

“I’d be more worried if I was Isak, sat there watching,” Rooney said. “His Liverpool career just hasn’t got going yet.”

Rooney’s verdict on Ekitike

The former Manchester United striker was particularly impressed by Ekitike’s second goal against Newcastle, likening it to the instinctive finishing of Romario.

Rooney also highlighted the forward’s versatility, noting his ability to drift wide, link play and score consistently. “He’s got a bit of everything,” Rooney added.
