Pregnant woman passes away as soldiers chase yahoo boys in Delta

On Saturday evening, a stray bullet reportedly claimed the life of a pregnant woman during a military chase of suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as yahoo boys, in Delta State.

Eyewitnesses in the Abraka community, Ethiope-East Local Government Area, said soldiers attached to Operation Delta Sweep had attempted to stop the suspects for a search. The young men allegedly refused to comply and sped off, prompting the soldiers to open fire while in pursuit.

In the process, a stray bullet hit the pregnant woman, who was going about her normal activities. She reportedly died instantly before any help could reach her.

A viral video circulating online showed the victim, dressed in a white outfit soaked in blood, being carried into a vehicle by a uniformed man in a desperate rescue attempt.

The killing immediately sparked outrage in the area, as indigenes, residents, and students poured into the streets in protest, demanding justice for the innocent victim, blocking roads and accusing the soldiers of recklessness and abuse of power.

Reacting, the Chairman of Ethiope-East LGA, Hon. Chief Augustine Ogedegbe, described the death as “painful” and “avoidable.”

“It is deeply concerning to see incidents like this, which diverge from the intended duties of combating crime and ensuring public safety,” Ogedegbe said in a Facebook post. He vowed to pursue justice for the victim while assuring that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence.

He further appealed for calm in Abraka and extended condolences to the bereaved family, praying for strength in their time of grief.
