Rome to Milan: Artist Residency through the palate of a Chef

I recently had the privilege of participating in an artist residency at SPAZIO GRIOT in Rome. This unique experience allowed me to delve deeper into my culinary practice and explore new creative avenues. Surrounded by fellow artists from diverse backgrounds, I engaged in stimulating discussions and found inspiration in the city of Rome. SPAZIO GRIOT: A Legacy of Black Artistic Expression The residency at SPAZIO GRIOT was particularly meaningful as it drew inspiration from the Second Congress of Black Artists and Writers held in Rome in 1959. This historic event brought together intellectuals from Africa, the Americas, and Europe to discuss the significance of Black culture and its autonomy. By participating in this residency, I felt a deep connection to the rich legacy of artistic expression and cultural exchange. Nature’s Influence and Culinary Clarity Spending time at the Solaria Boccea farm, where the residency was held, surrounded by nature’s beauty, provided me with a much-needed respite and clarity of thought. The serene environment allowed me to reflect on my culinary research and refine my approach. The experience ignited a spark of inspiration, leading to the creation of a new menu. A Taste of Dine Afro-Italiano in Rome For the final dinner, I brought a taste of my Dine Afro-Italo concept to Rome. The menu featured a selection of dishes that showcased the fusion of African and Italian flavours: The menu was a resounding success, captivating the taste buds of my fellow residents, mentors, and artists. Building upon this positive reception, I debuted the final version of the menu (pictured below) at my next Dine Afro-Italiano Supper Club in Milan. Dine Afro-Italo is a celebration of Nigerian and Italian cuisine. Where the bold flavours of Nigeria intertwine seamlessly with Italian gastronomy. The residency provided a fertile ground for experimentation and exploration, resulting in the creation of dishes that pushed culinary boundaries. Culinary Exploration and Artistic Growth The artist residency at SPAZIO GRIOT was an invaluable experience that allowed me to grow as both an artist and a chef. Through immersion in a creative community and connection to a rich cultural heritage, I was able to explore new culinary horizons. This experience has been a testament to the power of artistic collaboration and the boundless possibilities that arise when cultures converge.
