Roblox Rolls Out Kids And Select Accounts With Protective Measures — Here’s What To Know

Roblox has introduced new safety measures for kids and young teens.

As AFROTECH™  previously reported, the immersive gaming and creation platform barred children from communicating with adults or much older teenagers and enforced this policy by using facial age estimation to limit them to their age group. Users will be placed in the following groups: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, or 21 and up, according to The Guardian.

This makes Roblox the first online gaming or communication platform to require age checks for communication, it claims per the outlet. More than 50% of the platform’s 144 million daily users have completed the age check, The Verge reports.

“We see it as a way for our users to have more trust in who the other people they are talking with are in these games,” said Matt Kaufman, Roblox’s chief safety officer, at the time of the announcement in December 2025, per The Guardian. “And so we see it as a real opportunity to build confidence in the platform and build confidence amongst our users.”

These changes also followed several lawsuits that accused Roblox of creating a system that makes “children easy prey for paedophiles, according to the outlet.

Kids Account Explained

In the latest update, the company has now rolled out a Roblox Kids account, according to The Verge. This will apply to users 5 to 8 years old or to those who opt out of age verification. This will default to chats no longer being available unless a parent approves communication between their child and the other user. Additionally, users can only access games withMinimalorMild” content maturity labels. However, a parent can approve games that aren’t available by default under restrictions, TechCrunch reports.

Select Account Explained

A Roblox Select account has also been introduced and will apply to users ages 9 to 15 who can play games withModeratelabels. The chat isgradually turned on within Roblox Select accounts based on a user’s age, said Roblox’s Kaufman, according to The Verge.

A kid’s account will automatically change to Select over time as they age, per the outlet. And Select users will transition to a standard account based on age. The new accounts will be available globally in June, TechCrunch reports.

There are also additional measures to be considered for both accounts before users can access their games, per The Verve. They will need to pass a three-step review process, which includes either verifying a government-issued ID or being tied to a parent’s account, turning on two-factor authentication, and having a Roblox Plus subscription, which costs $4.99 per month.

Roblox Premium will no longer be an available subscription when Roblox Plus launches officially on April 30, according to TechCrunch.

Games must also pass the company’sreal-time multimodal moderation system, and Roblox will continue to review reports to determine whether the game remains safe for young players, The Verge noted.

“We want to be sure that we have enough information about each game from our real-time evaluation before it’s shown to Select and Kids accounts based on the content maturity of the game,” spokesperson Juliet Chaitin-Lefcourt told the outlet.
