Oby Ndukwe, the publisher of the Beam Newspaper in Port Harcourt, has remarked that Rivers elders no longer hold sway, lamenting that their voices no longer resonate with the people. She pointed out that the influence of Rivers elders has waned due to the pervasive influence of money politics, where those with financial power dictate the course of events in the state.

In an interview with Arise TV, Ndukwe went on to allege that some of these elders are financially aligned with political leaders, leading to conflicting judgments and compromising their traditional role as unbiased arbiters.

According to her, “I have said it before: do the elders really have a role to play? Who listens to the elders anymore? The time when elders spoke and people listened is long gone. This is due to money politics; it’s the person who pays the piper that dictates the tune. It’s whoever has the red pen or money that decides what happens.
