Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has voiced strong concerns over what he terms voter bribery and state interference in Mbeere North ahead of the November 27 by-election.

Speaking on Sunday at A.C.K St. Stephen’s Karangare Church in Ishiara, Gachagua accused the government of pouring large sums of money into the campaign of UDA candidate Leonard “Leo” Muriuki, widely known as Leo wa Muthende. Muriuki is competing against Democratic Party (DP) candidate Newton Kariuki, popularly referred to as Newton Karish.

Gachagua claimed state actors are using financial inducements to sway voters, insisting that residents should make their decisions freely. He further alleged that the money being circulated is public funds misused for political gain.

“Take all the money they bring here, some Sh600 million. That money is enough to connect every home in Mbeere North with power,” he said, urging locals to vote according to their conscience rather than financial enticements.

He said the opposition camp would attach great importance to observing all aspects of the voting process in ensuring transparency.

“Do not be worried. They will not steal our votes. We will be vigilant,” he said.

Gachagua also rallied residents to support Karish, whom he endorses, arguing that voters should reject what he described as a government-sponsored candidate.

He warned of possible disruptions during the by-election, alleging that intelligence reports point to efforts to import troublemakers into the constituency.

“We have information that those spearheading the campaigns for the government here are looking for people from other areas to come and cause problems in Mbeere North,” he claimed.

“Do not send people here to cause trouble. Let the competition be fair.”
