Real Madrid have confirmed that midfielder Fede Valverde has been diagnosed with a grade 3 sprain of his left ankle and is expected to be sidelined for around two weeks.

The Uruguay international sustained the injury during Sunday’s Madrid derby against Atlético Madrid following a heavy challenge from Lee Kang-in.

Valverde managed to complete the match despite the incident but was later found to have suffered significant trauma to the ankle.

Medical tests carried out on Tuesday by Real Madrid’s medical staff confirmed the severity of the sprain, which is classified as the most serious type of ligament injury.

The absence will rule Valverde out of Uruguay’s upcoming international fixtures during the break.

Real Madrid will monitor his recovery closely, with the midfielder aiming to return in time for the club’s next La Liga fixture against Villarreal on 10 October.
