“I never knew I could do it,” Isaac Tan, 38, a real estate agent told Salt&Light.

With just 18 months of experience under his belt, Isaac was a relative newcomer to the real estate scene and to his company. But today, he is leading a group of six in a journey of discipleship.

When Isaac joined the real estate industry, he was eager to live out his faith in an industry rife with fierce competition and mistrust. He found other Christians in his organisation and joined an existing Christian fellowship group.

But Isaac yearned for more than fellowship and encouragement. He wanted to see Christians live out the Gospel and be witnesses in his workplace.

“I was new, and half of the people in the group are very experienced in the industry,” he said. “But God took the fire in my heart and connected me with others in the company.”

Isaac and five other colleagues who shared the same burden started a discipleship group. But they soon found the need for a curriculum they could follow consistently.

The goal of GROW is for Christians to journey together as disciples in order to be witnesses for Christ in the workplace.

Isaac came across the GROW the Marketplace discipleship curriculum – a series of 12 videos and workbooks – developed by founder of Arrows College, Pastor Benny Ho in collaboration with Cadence Culture.

The curriculum forms an integral part of GROW the Marketplace, a marketplace discipleship movement spearheaded by Salt&Light and the Thirst Collective.

The series gave Isaac and his colleagues a place to start their journey together.

Once a week, they watched a video and shared their hearts and lessons learned with one another through the guided reflections in the curriculum.

“I used to see faith and work as two very separate parts of my life,” said one of the colleagues who attends the small group. Now she now sees God’s calling for them, the purpose of their work and the importance of being a witness  in the workplace.

Gather and Rally

Across industries, many Christians share a similar experience — a genuine desire to live out their faith at work only to find momentum fading at the beginning of each work week, when real challenges hit.

That is why GROW is gathering Christians from specific industries to remind them of their calling in the workplace and to provide encouragement.

In the past year, Salt&Light has gathered Christians from five different industries: Education, adult education, financial planning, finance and banking, and real estate. More are in the pipeline.

Peck Sim, who recently took on the role of Head of Partnerships at Thirst Collective, knows the pain of walking alone in her journey of faith in the workplace.

For more than 20 years, she was the lone Christian in the multinational company (MNC) she worked in.

GROW is an industry-by-industry marketplace discipleship initiative spearheaded by Salt&Light and the Thirst Collection. (L-R) Ruth Seah, Executive Director, GROW; Ps Edric Sng, Editor at Salt&Light, Peck Sim, Head of Partnerships and events at Thirst Collective.

It was only later that God connected her with two other believers. As they prayed together and supported one another, they saw change – first within themselves, then within the organisation.

“If this could happen with just two or three people coming together, imagine the fire that could spread with a gathering of hundreds in the same industry!” Peck noted. In her new role, she will organise and manage the marketplace gatherings under GROW.

However, while such moments of connection and encouragement matter, Pastor Edric Sng, Editor of Salt&Light pointed out: “Excitement alone doesn’t go far. It quickly fizzles out once back in the daily grind.”

These gatherings are a launchpad to ongoing community, shared discipleship, and a faith lived out consistently in the workplace as a witness for His kingdom.

Organise and Witness

Comprising 12 teaching videos accompanied by a workbook with facilitator notes and reflection questions, the GROW curriculum equips believers to be faithful Christian witnesses in the workplace.

“Ps Benny was very good about giving practical steps in the video,” Isaac noted. “For example, finding a person or naming a name that one can pray for in the workplace. As a group, we can keep each other accountable.”

Another member of the group said: “Without companions, I would have felt much more lost. Being able to reflect and pray together made a real difference.”

Ruth Seah, who recently joined Salt&Light as Executive Director of GROW the Marketplace,  is familiar with the complexities of corporate life after more than three decades in MNCs such as IBM, Microsoft and Schneider Electric.

Throughout those years, she has gravitated towards journeying with people — organising small groups, mentoring the young, and creating spaces for faith to be lived out in community.

Ruth will spearhead the organisation and formation of GROW groups in the workplace.

“GROW is not an activity, but a discipleship journey to be stewarded carefully — creating safe, sustainable spaces where believers can centre Christ in their work and find true purpose,” she said.
