Radio Citizen and Radio Jambo Locked in a Tight Fight for Kenyan Audience

Kenya’s radio landscape has continued to change over the years as the battle for popularity among stations intensifies. Recent surveys have shown that Radio Jambo, owned by the Radio Africa Group, is closing in on Radio Citizen. The two have been named as the most listened-to radio stations in Kenya in what appears to be a two-horse race.

According to a recent IPSOS and GeoPoll study, the two stations have strong nationwide reach, consistent programming, and a deep connection with listeners across regions and age groups.

Data from Geopoll further showed that Radio Maisha, owned by the Standard Group, is the third most popular station, followed by Radio Milele, KBC Radio Taifa, and Radio 47.

On the other hand, the IPSOS survey ranked Classic 105 third, after Radio Citizen and Radio Jambo. This solidifies Radio Africa’s dominance since Classic 105 is one of its flagship brands.

At position four is Radio 47, followed by NRG Radio, Ramogi, Radio Maisha, Kameme, Milele, iNooro, and Kiss FM, respectively.

Why Radio Jambo is popular

Radio Jambo emerged as a leading station in Nairobi, driven by the popularity of its Breakfast Show hosted by Gidi na Ghost and the Drive Show led by Mbusi na Lion in the afternoon.

The station has distinguished itself with particularly strong performance in urban centers, especially Nairobi.

According to the survey, Radio Jambo commands the largest listenership in the capital, accounting for about 7.3% audience reach and about 20.2% of total listening time.

Radio Jambo’s programming strategy has focused heavily on personality-driven shows that blend humor with everyday conversations.

Its flagship Breakfast Show, hosted by the iconic duo Gidi and Ghost, remains one of the most talked-about programs on Kenyan radio, drawing in loyal listeners in the morning.

The show airs from 6:00 am to 10:00 am, delivering engaging conversations, humour, and relatable content that sets the pace for the country every morning.

At the same time, Radio Jambo enjoys huge popularity during the drive time from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, hosted by the energetic Mbusi and Lion, who keep Kenyans entertained and informed as they wind down their day.

Other prolific presenters who stamp Radio Jambo’s authority in Kenya are airwaves queens Massawe Japanni and Mwende Macharia.

The two have had successful radio careers that have earned them a near-fanatical following.

Radio Citizen Retains National Lead

On the other hand, Radio Citizen maintained a strong national presence, particularly outside major urban centers.

Owned by media mogul SK Macharia, Radio Citizen has maintained its position as Kenya’s most listened-to radio station, despite pressure from Radio Jambo.

The latest IPSOS Kenya Audience Measurement Survey for the fourth quarter of 2025 shows Radio Citizen topping the rankings with approximately 17% market share.

The station’s success is attributed to its broad mix of news, talk shows, and sports coverage.

Its Kiswahili-language format and wide signal reach have helped it remain a household favorite in both urban and rural regions
