India’s arm of consulting firm PwC has asked employees to review all domestic and international travel plans and undertake trips only where there is a clear business need, as the firm responds to a more uncertain economic environment..

The firm said it was continuing to monitor the “evolving macro-economic environment” while focusing on supporting clients and safeguarding employee wellbeing through “prudence” and flexibility.

The move follows a recent appeal by Narendra Modi for restraint and responsible consumption as part of a broader push for fiscal prudence and austerity.

“We remain aligned with the spirit of this appeal, while continuing to support clients, businesses and the wider economy with discipline and responsibility,” said Sanjeev Krishan, chairperson of PwC in India.

PwC said the guidance on travel builds on existing policies and reflects its focus on “disciplined decision-making”. The company added that its flexible working framework would remain in place to help teams meet client requirements while maintaining productivity and collaboration.

The comments come amid concerns over the impact of the conflict in West Asia on oil prices and global supply chains. Modi has recently urged citizens to reduce fuel consumption, limit foreign travel, avoid overseas destination weddings and defer gold purchases.

India’s “medium-to-long-term growth outlook remains resilient”, citing fiscal consolidation and structural reforms that continue to strengthen the country’s economic fundamentals despite external pressures, Krishan said.

PwC in India reportedly has about 35,000 employees. PwC’s Global Annual Review 2025 says the network had 364,782 people in 136 countries, while PwC India’s current About Us page also uses newer wording of more than 370,000 people in 149 countries.
