Putin Escalates War, Fires Over 70 Missiles and Hundreds of Drones at Ukrainian Cities

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on February 3, confirmed that Putin launched a major strike overnight targeting multiple regions across Ukraine, using over 70 ballistic and other missiles along with 450 attack drones.

The attacks focused on energy infrastructure but also damaged residential buildings.

“Once again, there was a targeted attack specifically on energy facilities – the Russians used a significant number of ballistic missiles in combination with other missiles, more than 70 missiles in total, as well as 450 attack drones,” Zelenskyy noted in a publicly shared post on his X account.

Ukrainian Cities Hit By Russia

According to the Ukrainian president, the strikes affected the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, the Kyiv region and the capital, as well as Dnipro, Odesa, and Vinnytsia regions.

In Kyiv, drone attacks sparked fires in high-rise buildings and damaged a kindergarten. As of the latest reports, nine people have been injured. Emergency and recovery services have been deployed where possible to manage the aftermath of the attacks.

Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, highlighting that Russia is using the coldest days of winter to terrorise civilians rather than pursue diplomacy.

He emphasised the urgent need for support from international partners, particularly through the timely delivery of missiles for air defence systems to protect ordinary life.

“Without pressure on Russia, there will be no end to this war,” Zelenskyy said. “Moscow is choosing terror and escalation, which is why maximum pressure is required. I thank all our partners who understand this and are helping us,” he added.

Ukrainian Railways at the Centre of the Assault

As of February 2, Zelenskyy shared that Russian forces intensified attacks on Ukraine’s logistics infrastructure over 24 hours, with railway facilities emerging as the primary target.

According to the Ukrainian president, Russian attacks over the past day were concentrated on logistics corridors, particularly the railway network.

Strikes were reported in the Dnipro region and in Zaporizhzhia, where railway facilities were directly hit.

“As on previous days, the Russian army remains focused on terror against our logistics – primarily railway infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said. He added that the attacks are designed to disrupt civilian mobility, military logistics, and the delivery of essential goods across the country.

In response, specific operational tasks were issued to the Commander of the Air Force, the Minister of Defence, and the head of the national railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia.

Zelenskyy stressed the urgency of these measures, stating, “I expect these tasks to be carried out today.”
