PTAs officially reinstated in all schools nationwide

The Ministry of Education has introduced a nationwide initiative for Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) under a new framework aimed at enhancing collaboration between schools and families.

This announcement comes after the National Curriculum Review Committee finalised the policy guidelines for the operationalisation of PTAs.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu encouraged parents and teachers to unite in the quest to improve learning outcomes, emphasising that education is a collective endeavour.

“PTAs are back. Now there is an established norm with guidelines to facilitate and support their work. Socialisation is a shared responsibility, particularly for young learners. While the child spends time at home, significant hours are spent in school, making both parents and teachers equally responsible for shaping the child. Ghana’s concept of socialisation must be shared,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Kofi Asare, Chairman of the Committee on the Guidelines, highlighted the importance of PTAs taking an active role in school-level decision-making rather than being limited to fundraising activities.

“These guidelines seek to prevent PTAs from being reduced to contributors of funds. Their key role must be participation in decisions to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

“The scope of PTAs in school development has now been tailored more towards involvement in learning and decision-making processes,” he elaborated.

Mr. Asare also urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure that the guidelines are implemented effectively.
