FG Adopts Kaduna’s Household Mapping Model to Tackle Out-of-School Children Nationwide

The Federal Government has adopted Kaduna State’s household mapping model as a national strategy to address Nigeria’s persistent out-of-school children crisis, marking a significant step toward improving access to education through data-driven interventions.

The decision was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, during a meeting with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani in Abuja.

The adoption follows the reported success of Kaduna’s household mapping framework, which Governor Sani said has helped reduce the number of out-of-school children in the state from approximately 550,000 to fewer than 180,000.

Describing the Federal Government’s decision as a major endorsement of Kaduna’s governance model, the governor said the initiative has transformed educational planning by providing accurate household-level data to identify vulnerable children and communities requiring urgent intervention.

According to him, the mapping framework enables authorities to deploy targeted programmes, allocate resources efficiently and ensure that children who are outside the school system are identified and enrolled.

“The household mapping model has become a critical tool in our education reforms,” Governor Sani said, adding that the availability of reliable data has strengthened policy implementation and improved decision-making across the sector.

He noted that the initiative has significantly boosted school enrolment and retention by addressing the unique socio-economic barriers preventing children from accessing education.

Governor Sani said the Federal Government’s decision to adopt the model demonstrates growing confidence in Kaduna State’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking and innovative public service delivery.

He pledged the state’s full support in working with federal authorities to implement the framework across the country, expressing optimism that nationwide adoption would substantially reduce the number of children currently out of school.

The governor further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every child has access to quality education, stressing that sustainable progress in the sector depends on strategic partnerships, credible data and well-targeted interventions.

Nigeria continues to grapple with one of the world’s highest numbers of out-of-school children, making the adoption of Kaduna’s data-driven model a potentially significant milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to reverse the trend and strengthen educational outcomes nationwide.
