Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League final victory over Arsenal has triggered widespread civil unrest across France, leaving hundreds of people injured in clashes between fans and police.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that a total of 219 people were injured during the violence, with eight of those reported to be in a serious condition.

Thousands of officers were deployed across the country to contain the unrest, which caused significant disruption to bus, train and rail services in the capital Paris.

Fifty-seven police officers were among those injured as security forces worked to bring the situation under control throughout the night.

Nuñez confirmed that 780 people had been arrested in connection with the violence, with more than 450 individuals remaining in custody.

One person was found dead following an accident on Paris’s ring road, after rioters attempted to block the route overnight.

Authorities have mobilised around 6,000 police officers ahead of Sunday’s victory parade, which is set to take place at the site of the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Interior Minister Nuñez insisted that security forces would be “firm” in dealing with any further disorder during the celebrations.

“We are a great country for maintaining public order. We allow freedom of assembly, but not excesses,” he said.

“The vast majority go out to celebrate and it goes very well. But other individuals, who are not PSG supporters, who don’t even watch the match, come to cause trouble and disturbances. We are here to prevent them from doing so. Our response is very firm.”
