President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has been ranked the third most corrupt leader globally by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

This ranking was the result of a worldwide nomination initiative by OCCRP aimed at highlighting individuals implicated in promoting criminal enterprises and worsening poverty levels.

Kenyan President William Ruto emerged at the top of this list, followed by former Indonesian President Joko Widodo in the second position.

Notwithstanding these rankings, the prestigious title of “Person of the Year” was conferred upon Bashar al-Assad, the deposed leader of Syria, who is presently residing in exile in Russia.

The organizers of OCCRP underscored the importance of public indignation towards corruption in influencing the formation of these rankings.

At the age of 72, Tinubu was implicated for allegedly fostering a culture of corruption within Nigeria. During his administration as the governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2003, he faced allegations of accumulating considerable wealth for himself and his family.

Since assuming the presidency of Nigeria in May 2023, Tinubu has encountered scrutiny regarding a multitrillion-naira infrastructure project awarded to a company owned by his son. The contentious Abuja-Calabar route initiative has sparked concerns regarding the potential perpetuation of corruption.

Further controversies involve allegations surrounding Tinubu’s purported history as a cocaine trafficker in Chicago, as well as claims of certificate forgery that surfaced subsequent to his inauguration.

Tinubu has steadfastly refuted all accusations of corruption.
