The Premier League has confirmed that matches will again include brief pauses during Ramadan to allow Muslim players break their fast at sunset.

The stoppages, taken at a natural break in play, were first introduced across English football in 2021 and have largely been welcomed by players, managers and supporters as a simple show of respect for the holy month.

The first such pause came during Leicester City’s clash with Crystal Palace in April 2021, when the game was stopped at a goal-kick around the half-hour mark to allow Leicester’s Wesley Fofana and Palace’s Cheikhou Kouyate to take fluids and energy gels.

“We want to make sure players can perform at their best while observing their faith. “These breaks are designed to be practical, brief, and respectful,” EPL said.

The sacred month of Ramadan is a time of contemplation and introspection for Muslims around the world, symbolized by fasting, prayer, and communal solidarity.

As a result, players taking part in evening matches during this period will need to break their fast once the sun has set, which will impact their physical performance.
