The Federal Ministry of Power has assured Nigerians that 2026 will mark a turning point in the country’s electricity supply, with a focus on consolidating the gains recorded in 2025 and delivering more reliable, accessible, and sustainable power nationwide.

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, gave the assurance at the weekend in his New Year message, acknowledging the challenges faced in the sector over the past year while highlighting notable achievements, particularly in stabilising the national grid and recording what he described as historic milestones in power generation and distribution.

Adelabu noted that ongoing reforms and investments under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), popularly known as the Siemens Deal, have significantly strengthened the national grid and reduced the frequency of grid collapses experienced in previous years. He expressed optimism that the current Phase One of the initiative would further improve grid resilience, making widespread power disruptions increasingly uncommon.

Reflecting on 2025, the minister commended Nigerians for their patience and resilience amid persistent challenges such as grid instability and distribution bottlenecks. He described the public’s understanding as crucial to laying the foundation for a more robust and dependable power sector.

Addressing the people of Oyo State, Adelabu reaffirmed his commitment to representing their interests at the national level, stating that their continued support has reinforced his resolve to serve diligently.

Looking ahead, the minister restated the federal government’s determination to ensure reliable electricity supply to households, businesses, and industries as a driver of economic growth. He outlined key priorities for 2026, including enhanced grid stability, expansion of transmission infrastructure, closer collaboration with distribution companies, and accelerated nationwide metering.

He added that the Light Up Nigeria initiative would remain a flagship programme, with renewed focus on industrial clusters and agricultural hubs to boost productivity, stimulate economic growth, and create jobs. Adelabu also underscored the government’s commitment to renewable energy development, particularly solar and hydropower, as part of efforts to extend electricity access to rural and underserved communities.

The minister stressed that achieving sustainable progress in the power sector would require collective responsibility, calling on state governments, local communities, the private sector, and citizens to work together.

“Protecting power infrastructure and embracing energy-efficient practices are important roles every Nigerian must play. As we enter the new year, we must do so with shared responsibility and renewed optimism. The work continues, and our resolve remains strong,” he said.
