Porsche is joining the likes of GM, Honda, Renault, and Polestar by embracing Google built-in.

Thanks to a new partnership with Google, models introduced around the middle of the decade will have a modern operating system that allows easy access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store. The latter is particularly noteworthy as it will give Porsche drivers access to a wide variety of apps such as Amazon Music, Spotify, and iHeart Radio – among others.

Porsche didn’t go into many specifics, but suggested many of the changes will be hidden from view as “customers will continue to find the familiar user interface of the Porsche Communication Management system.” However, customers can expect a vastly improved experience thanks to natural language voice commands, voice-based texting, and built-in Google Maps.

Porsche Chairman Oliver Blume said, “In addition to timeless design and exceptional performance” customers “want a seamless digital experience.” He added, “This blended ecosystem results from the integration of platforms and apps that customers know from their end devices.”

Google’s Senior Vice President of Platforms and Ecosystems, Hiroshi Lockheimer, expanded on that by saying “We’re excited to partner with Porsche on their goal to bring innovative and helpful in-vehicle experiences to their customers. With an infotainment experience built on Android, drivers will be able to access the latest Google technologies and services in tandem with the best of Porsche design and branding.”

While Porsche and Google are shacking up, the automaker suggested the relationship isn’t exclusive. Quite the opposite as in the future, “ecosystems from different providers that are relevant for customers will be integrated directly into the vehicle via standardized interfaces and platforms.”
