Police Officer Jailed for 2 Years Over Abuse of Power

A police officer has been jailed after being found guilty of abusing his authority for personal gain.

The officer, identified as Owens Mills, was arrested following an investigation by an anti-corruption unit, which revealed that he engaged in a s-xual relationship with a vulnerable woman and also maintained an inappropriate relationship with a witness he met while on duty.

During his trial at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in May, Mills admitted to two counts of Corrupt and Improper Exercise of Police Powers and Privileges by a Constable.

The first charge involved his s*xual relationship with a vulnerable woman, while the second related to a personal relationship with a witness he came into contact with during his duties.

On Tuesday, August 12th, Mills was sentenced to two years in prison.

Following the sentencing, Staffordshire Police Acting Deputy Chief Constable, Caroline Marsh, expressed disappointment over the officer’s conduct saying: “Mills’ behaviour represents a serious breach of trust and police values.

“His admission of guilt reflects the strength of the evidence gathered during the investigation.

“Extensive training has been delivered to all officers on the importance of maintaining professional boundaries and recognising improper relationships.

“Officers and staff are actively encouraged to report any concerns to our Professional Standards Department.

“Mechanisms are also in place to allow anonymous reporting, ensuring that individuals feel safe and supported in coming forward.”
