Police Deploy New Commissioner to Osun Ahead of August 15 Governorship Election

The Nigeria Police Force has deployed a new Commissioner of Police to Osun State ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election, in a strategic move aimed at strengthening security arrangements as political activities intensify.

According to security sources, Commissioner of Police (CP) Samuel Erale has been assigned to oversee policing and election security in the state, succeeding CP Ibrahim Gotan, who was recently redeployed from the Osun State Police Command.

The deployment comes just days after Erale’s promotion to the rank of Commissioner of Police. He was officially decorated with his new rank on July 21, paving the way for his latest assignment.

His appointment places him at the centre of security operations for one of the country’s most closely watched off-cycle governorship elections, where the police are expected to coordinate efforts to maintain peace before, during and after the polls.

The redeployment of Gotan was approved by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, through a police wireless signal issued from the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The official directive, marked “Most Immediate,” instructed that CP Gotan be transferred to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Communications Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja, on special duty with immediate effect.

The signal was circulated to police formations and commands nationwide, including the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Department of Operations, Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Assistant Inspectors-General of Police across the country’s 17 zones, state police commands and specialised units.

Police authorities directed all affected commands to implement the redeployment without delay.

The latest reshuffle comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties and security agencies intensify preparations for the governorship election, which is expected to attract national attention.

Security has remained a critical component of the electoral process, with the Nigeria Police Force expected to work alongside other security agencies to ensure a peaceful, credible and violence-free election across Osun State.

The deployment of CP Erale is seen as part of broader efforts by the police hierarchy to reinforce operational readiness and inspire public confidence in the security architecture ahead of the crucial poll.

As election day draws closer, residents and stakeholders are expected to closely monitor the police’s security strategy to guarantee the protection of voters, electoral officials and election materials throughout the exercise.
