Plateau State Police Command has arrested more than 12 suspects linked to various crimes, including kidnapping, in a major security operation.

Among those apprehended was Auwal Mohammed, who was caught supplying bread and other items to kidnappers in the Mazah community of Jos North Local Government Area.

Briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Jos on Thursday, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina stated that Mohammed, a member of a kidnap syndicate operating between Plateau and Bauchi States, was arrested by detectives from the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit while delivering supplies to his cohorts.

“As part of our efforts to rid Plateau State of kidnapping activities, the command has arrested a member of a kidnap syndicate around Mazah community in Jos North Local Government Area,” Adesina said.

He added, “The suspect, one Auwal Mohammed, 20 years old of Tilde Fulani, Toro LGA of Bauchi State, was apprehended on 03/08/2025 at about 12:30pm by our detectives from the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit. Upon conducting an on-the-spot search on him, the following items were found in his possession: one cutlass, loaves of bread, packets of cigarettes, sachets of powdered Chekers Custard, one torchlight, sachets of glucose, sachets of Top Tea, and one Tecno Camon phone, which he claimed belonged to one of the victims.”

The CP further revealed that Mohammed confessed to being part of a kidnap syndicate operating along the borders of Plateau and Bauchi States. “He also stated that he was out on a mission to obtain more supplies for his fellow gang members while awaiting a response from their victim’s family,” Adesina said.

The suspect remains in police custody as authorities intensify efforts to arrest his cohorts and ensure they are prosecuted in court.

In addition, the CP disclosed the arrest of three other suspects — Sunusi Abdullahi, Suleiman Saidu, and Abbas Yusuf — who were involved in kidnapping activities in the Mista-Ali area of Bassa Local Government Area.

Adesina also announced the rescue of a kidnap victim named Ebuka and the arrest of four suspects, Joshua Ponzing Nathaniel, Zairuma Sani, Abas Sani, and Nanfa Goni, who were found in possession of a locally fabricated pistol.

Furthermore, two suspects, Inusa Yahaya and Abdulrahman Suleiman, were arrested with a locally fabricated revolver rifle, while another suspect, Godwin Jacob, was found with a locally made pistol.

The commissioner assured the public that the command remains committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property in Plateau State, particularly during the “Ember Months,” when criminal activities tend to increase.

“I have directed all DPOs and heads of tactical/patrol teams to embark on ‘Ember Month Surveillance’ operations to ensure that Plateau citizens and visitors are safe during this period,” Adesina said.

All suspects will be charged in court upon completion of investigations. The CP urged residents to continue providing credible intelligence to support the police in combating crime across the state.
