Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reportedly survived an alleged assassination attempt in Benin City, Edo State.

The claim was made by close associate of the former governor Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, in a post on social media.

Tanko said the incident occurred during the formal declaration of Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin.

According to him, armed men allegedly trailed Obi and other ADC leaders from the party’s secretariat to the residence of former Edo State governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

He alleged that the attackers fired shots at the gate of the residence and damaged several vehicles, describing the incident as a “survived assassination attempt.”

Tanko shared photos of a damaged gate and vehicles to support his claim, warning that the development poses a threat to democracy.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies in Edo State had not issued an official statement on the alleged attack.
