Peter Obi Holds Defection Rally Dec 31

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is reportedly finalizing plans to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a potential major realignment in Nigeria’s opposition landscape as the 2027 general elections approach.

A senior ADC official in Abuja revealed to journalists that Obi has concluded arrangements to defect and is scheduled to hold a high-profile declaration rally in Enugu – described as the “political capital of the South-East” – on December 31.

The source indicated that Obi’s supporters and loyalists are already mobilizing for the event, adding that the former Anambra State governor recently met with ADC National Chairman David Mark to reaffirm his commitment to the opposition coalition.

This development follows weeks of speculation amid ongoing consultations within the ADC-led opposition bloc, which includes heavyweights like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The party had previously urged Obi to clarify his position after he reportedly described the coalition as “unstable” earlier in December.

“Enugu was chosen because Obi represents the broader South-East region, not just Anambra,” the official explained, emphasizing the symbolic importance of the location.

However, caution prevails within the ADC leadership. National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi told Sunday PUNCH that while consultations continue, no official announcement has been made regarding Obi’s defection.

The Obidient Movement Worldwide, Obi’s core support base, also remained tight-lipped. National Coordinator Dr. Yunusa Tanko declined direct comment, stating that only Obi himself could address the matter.

Meanwhile, the Julius Abure-led Labour Party downplayed the reports. National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh said the party would withhold judgment until Obi speaks personally, describing defections as “normal in Nigerian politics” and not a “big deal” for the LP.

Obi’s potential move comes against the backdrop of internal challenges in the Labour Party and efforts to consolidate opposition forces under the ADC platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

As of now, Obi has not issued a public statement confirming or denying the plans. Political observers say a formal defection could significantly bolster the ADC’s national appeal, leveraging Obi’s massive youth-driven Obidient following.

This is a developing story. More details will follow as they emerge.
