He came to the limelight when he spearheaded the militaria negotiation for the bandits and the federal government. He was very vocal on the issue of amnesty for the bandits. He also gave a superior argument on why the bandits should not be taken out as proper negotiation and absolvement into the society should be a proper way to go.

IN 2010, a controversial and popular Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi was arrested and detained for over six months by the Saudi Arabian government for allegedly relating to Nigerian underwear bomber and terrorist, Farouk Abdulmutallab.

He was convicted of terrorism and sentenced to four life terms plus 50 years without parole on February 16, 2012, after acknowledging in a courtroom statement that he had traveled to Yemen and was greatly inspired to avenge what he described as ‘US tyranny and oppression of Muslims’ in the Middle East.

The cleric was arrested in February 2010 in Mecca after the United States shared intelligence with the Saudi authorities that he had been conversing and exchanging e-mails with Abdulmutallab shortly before the incident. He is the personality of the week.

It took the intervention of the Nigerian government before Gumi was released after spending many months under house arrest in Mecca.

In an interview, Gumi said the continued presence of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Pantami in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet was helping to fight terrorist ideology, jettisoning calls for Pantami’s resignation by Nigerians and the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after videos showed him expressing support and admiration for terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Gumi ran into a fresh crisis with security agencies last week when he said they have no right to declare any Nigerian a terror financier. The cleric had reacted to a recent list by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), declaring his close associate, Kaduna-based publisher, Tukur Mamu, and 14 others as terror sponsors. WHO IS SHEIK AHMED GUMI.

Abubakar Mahmud Gumi (7 November 1924 – 11 September 1992)was a Nigerian Islamic scholar and Grand Khadi of the Northern Region of Nigeria (1962–1967), a position which made him a central authority in the interpretation of the Shari’a legal system in the region.[3] He was a close associate of Ahmadu Bello, the premier of the Northern region in the 1950s and 1960s, and became the Grand Khadi. In 1967, the position was abolished. He was later sent to a school under the tutelage of a Malam called Musa at Ambursa, Sokoto province.

There he was introduced to Fiqh and read books and praise poems on the prophet. The first secular school he attended was the Dogondaji Primary School, while in the primary school, he met the future 18th Sultan of Sokoto, Ibrahim Dasuki, and excelled in religious duties.

In 1957, he became an interpreter for the Northern Nigeria government on Saudi Arabian matters.

He received the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic. In 1987, he received the King Faisal International Prize from Saudi Arabia for his translation of the Quran into the Hausa language.
