Patriotic Mason Jar Lanterns

On July 4, 2026, the United States will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence — and that means this is the year to go all out with your patriotic decor. Whether you’re hosting a backyard cookout, decorating your front porch, or just want to add a little red, white, and blue to your home for the most milestone Fourth of July in a generation, these DIY chalk paint mason jar lanterns are the perfect place to start.

They’re simple to make, budget-friendly, and absolutely gorgeous glowing on a porch table after dark. Let’s get into it.

I put together a quick YouTube tutorial to show you exactly how I made these.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • 1 half-gallon mason jar
  • 2 quart-sized mason jars
  • Adhesive vinyl (scraps work great)
  • Vinyl cutting machine or a 1/4″ circle punch and star craft punch
  • Red, white and blue chalk paint (I used Americana Chalk Paint in Everlasting, Romance, and Legacy)
  • painter’s tape
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Tea light candles or battery-operated tea lights

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut and Apply Your Vinyl Masks

Start by cutting out your vinyl shapes. For the quart jars, cut 1/4″ dots. For the half-gallon jar, cut 1-3/4″ stars. Stick them randomly across the surface of each jar — these will be your “resist” areas where the paint won’t stick, creating little windows of light later.

Step 2: Paint the Jars

Paint each of the jars with bright white chalk paint and let it dry.

Three Ball mason jars — one half-gallon and two quart-sized — all coated in white Americana Decor Chalky Finish paint as a base layer before adding color, with faint vinyl resist shapes visible.

Step 3: Paint the Stripe Jars

For the two quart-sized jars, use Frog Tape to mask off evenly spaced stripes. Paint the exposed stripe sections with Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint in Romance (a soft red). Allow the paint to dry fully before moving on.

Step 4: Paint the Star Jar

For the half-gallon jar, paint the entire surface with Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint in Legacy (a deep navy blue). Let it dry until it’s just tacky before peeling.

Step 5: Peel the Vinyl

Once all the paint is dry, carefully peel off the vinyl dots and stars. You’ll reveal clean, unpainted windows in the shapes of your design — this is what makes the lanterns glow so beautifully at night!

Step 6: Distress the Jars

After the paint is completely dry, lightly sand all three jars with 220-grit sandpaper to give them that weathered, chalky finish look. Focus on the edges and raised ridges of the jars for a natural distressed effect.

Step 7: Add Candles and Display

Drop a tea light into each jar and set them out on your porch or patio table. The painted jars glow softly through the unmasked shapes, creating a gorgeous patriotic effect after dark.

Tips and Variations

  • No vinyl cutter? Use adhesive craft foam punched into stars and circles as your mask instead.
  • Battery tea lights are a safer option if kids will be nearby.
  • Swap the colors for any holiday — try orange and black for Halloween or red and green for Christmas using the same technique.
  • Chalky finish paint adheres well to glass without primer, but lightly roughing up the surface with fine-grit sandpaper first will help the paint bond even better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of paint do you use on mason jars? Chalk finish paint (like Americana Decor Chalky Finish) works beautifully on glass. It adheres without primer and sands down easily for a distressed look.

Will the paint stay on the mason jars? For decorative use, chalk paint holds up well. If you plan to handle the jars frequently, seal them with a clear matte wax or spray sealer after distressing.

Can I use real candles inside the jars? Yes — the paint is dry and not flammable once fully cured. That said, battery-operated tea lights eliminate any risk and are just as pretty.

Where can I buy the supplies? Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint is available at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, and Amazon. Mason jars can be found at most craft stores, Walmart, or grocery stores.
